Passenger train services to Tarkwa finally begins on 28th Jan – Ghana Railways

The Ghana Railway Company Limited GRCL) has set Tuesday, 28th January, 2020, to begin the long awaited passenger rail services from Taklradi to Tarkwa. This comes after successful testruns on the rehabilitated rail lines supervised by the Ghana Railway Development t Authority (GRDA), the Regulator of the sector.

The GRCL has thus decided to render three days free services for passengers on Tuesday, 28th, Thursday, 30th and Friday, 31st January, 2020. The company adds that commercial passenger services on the line will, however, commence on 5th February, 2020.

This was announced on Saturday through a Press Release by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), signed by its Deputy Managing Director, Dr. Ing. Michael Adjei Anyetei, and copied to

However, the GRCL is warning that some stoppages are also likely to occur along the line since a Contractor is still working to develop the line.

“We wish to also indicate that currently, the Western Line is being developed, and occasionally there will be the need for GRCL to stop operations to enable the acinteactor do some civil works on the line. The general.public will be duly informed when such occasions arise,” the Release stated.

It will be recalled that passenger service on the Kojokrom to Tarkwa line has been out of service since 2007. In January 2019 the GRCL took over the line for rehabilitation works as part of its first phase of rehabilitation of the existing narrow-gauge line with funding by the Government of Ghana. The resumption of the service is therefore testament to the good Ghana Railways Company Limited can do with the right support.
